Historic District designation makes town eligible for grants - 6/10/2009
The Town of Bath Historic Landmark Commission has been established by town ordinances and certified by the State Historic Preservation Office. The commission’s goal is to provide input in community revitalization, economic development and heritage.
The Federal and National Park Services, and the U.S. Department of Interior, regulate historical preservation federally, while the West Virginia State Historic Preservation Office adminsters the projects.
The town’s Historic Landmark Commission has been awarded Certified Local Goverment (CLG) designation. To receive this designation, an historic preservation commission was established and a survey and inventory system for historic properties is being maintained. Ten percent of the state’s annual Federal Historic Preservation Fund must be delivered, usually in the form of grants, to the CLG’s in West Virginia.
Bath Historic Landmark Commission goals are to develop a unified program for the indentification, study and preservation of historical buildings, structures, sites and objects in the Town of Bath.
The group seeks to educate the public on the availability of grants and tax benefits for individual property owners as well as for businesses. Their charter is to educate, not regulate, and to motivate and involve people.
The commission is attempting to acquire signage that advertises the National Historic District status. They encourage cooperation with other local agencies, such as the Morgan County Historical & Genealogical Society.
The group welcomes interested parties to join the committee. Those interested should contact town hall or email thetownofbathhlc@ gmail.com.
